Going on Vacation?
Many of us are planning summer vacations and we don’t want to come home to a nasty surprise. Before you leave, take some simple precautions to reduce your chances of a break-in.
Don't Advertise Your Absence
- Cancel all home deliveries of newspaper, milk, etc. DON’T LEAVE NOTES! Arrange for the post office to hold or forward your mail. Other material such as throw-away newspaper and circulars should be removed daily by a neighbour.
- Arrange to have your lawn and shrubs trimmed and watered during your absence. This will not only make your home look “lived in”, but it will also save you money and work upon your return.
- Closed blinds or drawn drapes present an unoccupied appearance. Leave them in different positions and arrange to have these positions changed from time to time by a neighbour.
- For nighttime security, inexpensive low-voltage exterior lights with timers are available. Timers may also be used to control interior lights and radios.
- Turn your telephone bell down to its lowest level. A ringing telephone is an indication that you are not at home.
- Ask your neighbours not to inform inquiring strangers that you are away.
- Notify trusted neighbours of your plans and ask them to IMMEDIATELY call the police if they observe any unusual or suspicious activity around your home. They should record the license numbers of questionable vehicles.
Before You Leave
- BE SURE all tools and ladders are out of sight and locked up. Don’t provide a burglar with the tools to invade your home!
- BE SURE all light-timing devices are operative and set.
- BE SURE all doors and windows are securely locked.
- BE SURE to leave a number where you can be reached, either with a neighbour or a relative.
