February 2026 Presidents Message

February 4, 2026

Before getting into February, I need to take a moment to send a big thank you to the local businesses and volunteers who supported our December Hamper Program. If you haven’t participated in some capacity, I can say you likely can’t comprehend the difference this makes for some families. One of the Board members and her husband delivered hampers this year for the first time and made the following observation:

The joy, gratitude, and thanks that were expressed by the families were nearly overwhelming. The mothers both shrieked in disbelief at the volume of gifts. They could not believe we had to make many trips to our truck to bring everything into their homes. Both mothers repeatedly blessed us and hugged us. Their relief and thanks were so sincere. (Charmaine Grills)

If one of your goals in life is to make a difference in someone else’s life, this is certainly one way! Recipients are Edgemont residents, so your donation (time, money, etc.) supports local, and in the same spirit, I would encourage you to support local businesses. All participating businesses received a certificate of appreciation to display, so it shouldn’t be too hard to confirm which businesses stepped up in 2025.

Some say February is the shortest month of the year, but one packed with opportunities for adventure. At ECC, we will try to make that happen!

We are kicking off February with our Lego Mania Competition! Mark your calendar for February 7, 2026. There are 80 spots available with three categories: Things that Go, Scenes and Buildings, and Animals and Figures. Registration for Lego Mania is open. Check our website for details. Both participant builders and spectators are welcome. The creations are surprising! The imagination and the building skills of participants never cease to amaze. How do they get those little blocks to fit together in such unique ways?

Our Annual Frost Fest Family Day event is back on February 16th from 11 am to 2 pm at John Laurie Park. Please see our website for more details and to register. This is a free event, but we ask that you register so we can make sure we don’t run out of treats. Matthew Halladay is sponsoring this event and providing everyone with free Hot Chocolate and Timbits! Matthew is a local realtor well familiar with Edgemont! If you recall, last year this day was so warm that we moved the event to the ECC and we held a number of games resulting in some friendly competition. In my family, I seem to recall being crowned the bocci ball champion. Who knows what this year will hold? Fingers crossed that we will be up at the skating rink. By the way, the skating rink is open for as long as the weather will allow and it is maintained by a group of hearty folks who take care of the snow shovelling and all other matters related to offering residents a good skating experience.

As we say goodbye to the Year of the Snake, we welcome the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac on February 17th. It is viewed as a year of optimism and opportunity, with strong public and investor confidence pointing towards economic growth. Heaven knows, we could use a year like this!

If this is the year for you to invest in real estate or divest of some real estate, then mark your calendars for the Coffee and Conversation event on February 22nd from 2 pm to 4 pm. Guest speakers will be Realtor Dabs Fasola and Roxana Velicu. The discussion will focus on the 2026 Market Landscape, including:

🔹 Buying in 2026: What’s Different Now

🔹 Selling in a More Strategic Market

🔹 Investor Insights: Opportunity vs Risk

🔹 Buy, Sell, or Hold?

🔹 How to “Win Anyway” Strategy over Speculation

🎁 Bonus: Attendees will receive an exclusive Real Estate Reset Playbook + a complimentary home evaluation and consultation

Dabs and her team are also well acquainted with Edgemont, and you can expect to get some good information. Free refreshments and snacks provided. Check our website or social media for more information.

On March 6th, we will be having our second Free Drop-In Board Games Night, this time in our large Mountain View Room. Arrive on time to have a spot! Bring your games and your own snacks and enjoy some community fun! Please note no alcohol, and it is a 14+ event. Our first event was a smashing success!

In April, we will be hosting our first-ever jazz night with a full orchestra and vocals. Music will span from the 40s all the way to today’s contemporary jazz hits! Watch for more details to come on our website and social media! Like jazz? Then I hope to see you there.

Keep in mind that we will hold our AGM in May, with elections being the “highlight.” More information will be posted as it becomes available. Anyone with an interest in serving on the Board, contact Rick Wierzbecki or me for more information. We welcome new ideas and fresh energy!

That’s it for February!
