Summer Bucket List

July 1, 2021

By Erika Odney

Summer! I may be biased, but this is the best time of the year. Some of my favorite childhood memories were spent outside with my family in the sun. Some may have trip plans, some may be at home all summer, and others will be working. Even still, there is time to pass and what better way to pass it then to do something that involves bettering yourself in one way or another.

Indoor Activities- Sometimes it is too hot to go outside or other weather conditions do not permit you to be outside for the day, so what is one to do?

    • Books! There are so many options of what one can read. The special thing about books is that you can tailor them exactly to your person and what you enjoy. You can find old books in your home, the Calgary Public Library, Indigo (or any other book store), or the “Take a Book, Leave a Book” posts set up around your neighborhood.
  • Games: Games can be fun with any age of people, ranging from kids to adults. These links list easy games for everyone to get excited about!
    • Adult Oriented

  • Documentaries: Documentaries can be a way to feed the need to watch something and relax, while also learning something interesting. Documentaries can be found on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. They can also be found for free on Youtube. This link lists great ones on Youtube. https://mashable.com/article/best-documentaries-on-youtube/

Outdoor Activities- Being outside has so many benefits. It has been shown to improve physical health, as well as mental health, and simply general well-being. These are some fun things to do in Calgary to soak up some Vitamin D.

  • Walks, Hikes and Lakes: Calgary is a really big city with new things to see everyday. These are great activities to do with friends during Covid-19 and still socialize. Or, it can be fun as a solo activity. These links provide walks, hikes and lakes to visit around Calgary to get some exercise in and be outside. https://www.todocanada.ca/25-urban-walking-trails-in-calgary/

  • Pick a selfless hobby: There is nothing wrong with a little extra kindness in our world. Offering to cut a neighbor’s lawn or water their flowers can be a great way to do something for someone else.

There is an endless number of things to do in summer, it is the perfect time to get creative and bring yourself and your family back into the world after being indoors for so long. If you are looking for other things to do in this beautiful season, this link provides some awesome ideas too!
