NOVEMBER 2026 NEWS FROM OUR BOARD

November 5, 2026

As I write this on a beautiful evening in late September, November still feels quite far away. But soon, the golden colors of fall will fade into cooler weather, and it will be time to pull out the toques, scarves, and warm boots.

We have two key days of remembrance in November:

  • Indigenous Veterans Day (November 8): Honoring the military service and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis members.
  • Remembrance Day (November 11): A national statutory day to honor all veterans and those who served.

We also have sports history happening right in our backyard! The 113th Grey Cup will take place on November 15 at McMahon Stadium. This marks the 6th time Calgary has hosted the CFL championship game.

November is a great month to finish off your winter checklist:

  • Shut off exterior water/hoses, clear gutters, extend downspouts, and seal drafty doors/windows.
  • Check that your furnace, dryer and hot water tank exhaust vents are clear of leaves and debris.

Don’t forget inside, with the windows closed against cold weather and the furnace working overtime, it’s time to make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in full working order. Visit the City Of Calgary Home and Property Maintenance and Home and Safety for more information.

This November will be the first time in over 50 years that Alberta doesn’t ‘fall back’. According to Alberta.ca the new time is called Alberta Time (ABT).  As a result, commutes will be darker in the morning, so drivers and pedestrians should exercise extra caution.

A little note from the summer, are you as amazed as I am at these numbers?  The Edgemont Community Centre hosted 19 camps and over 45 events with roughly 10,450 participants between July 1 and August 31!

The fun continues with the Youth Community Art Class (November 14, 1 pm – 4 pm): Open to ages 5–17 and presented by Colour on Fire. To register visit Edgemont Community Association Programs and Events.

On November 28th 10am – 3pm we have our famous Winter Market.  This popular holiday tradition features local artisans, food vendors, and free hot chocolate courtesy of MLA Julia Hayter. It’s a great opportunity to shop local, get a photo with Santa, and support the Holiday Hamper Program.

Speaking of the Hamper Program, we appreciate the continued support of Edgemont residents and business owners. If you would like to spread a little cheer this season please consider making a donation of clothing, toys or food items. Cash donations can be made online at https//edgemont.getcommunal.com/dontate.

November History & Trivia: Did you know the word November comes from the Latin novem, meaning nine? In the original ten-month Roman calendar, the year began in March, making November the ninth month. Even after January and February were added centuries later—shifting November to the 11th month—the ancient name stuck!

As we embrace the shorter days and crisp November air here in Edgemont, this shift in the calendar reminds us of the seasonal cycles that bring us together. Whether you are supporting the Holiday Hamper program, attending an art class or coffee chat, or shopping at the Winter Market, November remains a vital time to connect with neighbors and celebrate our vibrant community.
